Vaccinations for AI Mares
MVS now require all mares grazing at MVS for the duration of their AI programme to be fully vaccinated for tetanus and strangles prior to arrival.
MVS recommend the below protocol for previously unvaccinated mares:
- 2n1 (tetanus and strangles) vaccine
2 weeks
- Strangles booster vaccine
2 weeks
- 2n1 (tetanus and strangles) vaccine
Mares that have been previously vaccinated using the above procedure require a yearly booster. We are able to administer the annual booster upon arrival of your mare at MVS if required.
Mary Passes Reproductive Board Exams
The team at MVS is extremely proud to announce that Dr Mary Ontiveros passed her American Board-Certification exams and is now a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists. The pass rate for this year’s 14 hour exam was only 37%, so this is a fantastic achievement! We are very lucky to have Mary working not only in the NZ Veterinary Industry but right here at MVS.
Congratulations to Jasmin who just passed her American Board Exams!
We are very excited and proud to let you all know that Dr Jasmin Hyatt, who many of you met during her three year residency training program with us at Matamata Veterinary Services, recently passed the American College of Theriogenologists board examinations that were held in Colorado earlier this month. Jasmin is taking a well deserved holiday tramping in Yellowstone National park before starting a seasonal equine position in Victoria, Australia managing mares for Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer.

Welcome Dr Sara Lyle
We are very fortunate to have Professor Sara Lyle join the Reproduction team recently from the USA helping us for time during the season while Fiona is on maternity leave.
Dr Lyle completed her veterinary degree and Masters program in Theriogenology at the University of Florida and recently completed her PhD at Louisiana State University (LSU) focused on immunological and endocrinological aspects of pregnancy. Dr Lyle was an Associate Professor at the LSU Veterinary School and has recently joined the team at North Carolina State University with her two dogs, Sammy and Gracie. These two veterinary schools have the strongest reproduction departments in the USA.
Dr Lyle is an expert in all areas of veterinary reproduction and she has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and text books and is a world renowned speaker at many international conferences in Veterinary reproduction.
Sara still has time for herself though, enjoying fishing, riding, and running (well, her dogs enjoy it when she runs). Dr Lyle brings a wealth of experience to the team and we are all very much looking forward to working with her.

Mare Vaccinations
With the breeding season well and truly upon us it is important to ensure that your mares vaccinations are up to date before she heads off to foal or to be put in foal. We are more than happy to provide advice on this subject to ensure you get the best coverage for your mare and new born foal.
Information can also be found on our information pages on the “Equine” section of the MVS website.
Thinking about freezing semen from your stallion?
With the breeding season drawing to a close and the main competitions all but complete, it is a great time of the year to be thinking about having semen frozen from your stallion. Our experienced team is able to help with training your stallion to be collected, semen assessments, and freezing for both the domestic and international markets. Semen freezing techniques are changing all the time, and with Victoria’s recent trip to Germany, we have a number of cutting-edge techniques available to optimize the quality of the frozen semen stored from your stallion.

Victoria off to Germany!
On the 17th September Victoria leaves for a 3 week trip to Germany to visit and work at some of Germany’s most prestigious Hanoverian Studs, including Celle State Stud and PSI, as well as visiting GennTrans and The University of Hannover. She will primarily be working with Dr Harold Seime, who is world renowned for his research in the area of stallion reproduction as well as Dr Jutta Klewitz who has been involved in the collection and freezing of hundreds of stallions at these studs. All of us here (and especially Victoria!) are very excited about this fantastic experience, and we are looking forward to her bringing back lots of new techniques and information for us to use here in New Zealand and to share with our valued clients.
During Victoria’s absence, Dr’s Fiona Hollinshead and Dave Hanlon will be available to answer any questions you may have about your breeding program and they are contactable on either 07 888 8197 or 07 888 8193. Our helpful office staff will be able to assist you with any general information. Dot will continue to handle the on site care and management of your mare or stallion throughout their stay with us.
Please direct any enquiries to equine@matamatavets.co.nz or call us on 07 888 8193.
