Spore count results for this week

May 20, 2016

Spore count results for grass samples brought into the clinic for testing this week are as follows:

  • Hinuera West – Nil (low risk) on 19.5.2016
  • Matamata – 10,000 (low risk) on 20.5.2016
  • Richmond Downs – 5,000 (low risk) on 17.5.2016
  • Te Poi – 15,000 (slight) on 19.5.2016

Spore counts have dropped right off with the rain and cooler weather this week. We will continue to monitor counts until we are happy they are not likely to come back up.

Supplies of Solutrace-FE water and Face-Guard zinc boluses are still available.

Other options include:

  1. Include alternative feeds to reduce spore intakes
  2. Aim to have high residuals, taking care not run yourself out of feed
  3. Try to avoid ‘hot’ pastures. Bring in grass samples to identify hot pastures
  4. Check if zinc can be incorporates in the meal
  5. Spraying fungicides will not reduce the spores currently present, but you get benefits in the weeks to come
