Are you facing a lack of feed?
December 15, 2017
We are getting more people asking us for help in dealing with a feed shortage at the moment due to the lack of rain.
While everyone’s situation is different there are a few consistents that are true for most people:
- Do a feed budget – Revise regularly (at least weekly for most people).
- Destock – Get rid of obvious culls.
- Consider once a day milking (need to have at least 10 days of decent feed ahead of you to stop cows drying themselves off).
Our vets are spending considerable time at present pregnancy testing cows that have not returned after the first round of AB, to help farmers identify Phantom cows that are not in calf and not cycling. More and more farmers are choosing to cull these cows now, to reduce the grazing pressure on farm.
As with most decisions on farm the sooner you make a plan the better the outcome.
If you need help creating a feed budget, have questions regarding what supplements to buy, early pregnancy testing or OAD milking, do not hesitate to talk to one of our vets on 07 888 8197.
