Latest Spore Count results

May 7, 2021

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:
  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks –  1,600 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks –  18,000 spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks – no samples tested this week
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks –  5,000 spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks – no samples tested this week

As expected, spore counts are trending downwards and yet they continue to surprise. As well as monitor farms, we also process samples from non monitor farms, one of which returned counts of nearly 85,000!

This week we have also seen a severe acute case of facial Eczema which results in anemia (low red blood cells) and severe liver damage, all this with no signs of facial eczema on the skin.

Taking these results into account we recommend you continue supplementing with zinc unless you have individual spore counts for your farm that indicate risk is low.

.Remember that spore counts vary from farm to farm and the only way to know your risk to check your grass for spores.

Latest Facial Eczema Results

April 9, 2021

Spore Counts remain both variable and high

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:
  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks – 21,600 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks – 5,000 spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks – 5,000 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks – 175,000 spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks – 11,600 spores/gram

Counts seen across local monitor farms are typical for Matamata at this time of the year.  It is important to remember that the risk of Facial Eczema is always near peak towards the end of the season therefore, unless monitoring, assume high risk and continue to treat with Zinc.

Remember that spore counts vary from farm to farm and the only way to know your risk to check your grass for spores.

Latest Facial Eczema Spore Counts

April 1, 2021

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:

  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks – 16,600 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks –  198,000 spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks –  3.300 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks –   no samples this week
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks –  140,000 spores/gram

Not all monitor farm data could be collected this week but counts on available monitor farms have increased.  Matamata and Walton are extremely high due to recent heavy rain and warm weather. If your area is not represented this week, consider the risk high until proven otherwise. Clinical cases have continued to be diagnosed, reinforcing the need for close monitoring of stock and preventative measures.

Remember that spore counts vary from farm to farm and the only way to know your risk to check your grass for spores.

At MVS she will be providing over-the-counter service to our customers, primarily with large animal health products, and ordering in stock to ensure we can meet all of our customers’ needs.
Outside of work, Kim enjoys spending time outdoors and travelling when able to.

We are excited to have Kim as part of our team.

Clinical cases sighted

March 26, 2021

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:

  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks – 5,000 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks –  62,000 spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks –  3.300 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks – 16,600  spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks –  1,600 spores/gram

Evidence of high spore counts was seen this week with a number of clinical cases of facial eczema seen in stock out at grazing. This is a timely reminder that spore counts vary from farm to farm and the only way to know your risk is to check your grass for spores.
Counts on monitor farms have slightly reduced, however counts in Matamata still present high risk, followed by Tirau showing moderate risk. While the trend is down it is likely that the counts will remain stable and present moderate to high risk as weather continues to favour spore multiplication.

Several farms in Matamata are seeing clinical signs of Facial Eczema

March 19, 2021

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:
  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks – 40,000 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks – 36,000 – spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks – 6,000 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks – 56,000 spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks –  26,000 spores/gram

Counts on monitor farms have slightly reduced this week, however, most farms are still showing moderate to high risk.  We anticipate this level of risk to continue for the coming weeks as conditions remain favorable for spore multiplication.

Measures to protect your stock against Facial Eczema should be undertaken ASAP, if they are not already in place.

Feel free to talk to us anytime about options for protecting your animals.

Health benefits of ProPath® LQ Zn 180

March 8, 2021

This product has been developed and scientifically validated in USA to:

  • Lower BTSCC
  • Reduce the severity of clinical Mastitis
  • Reduce lameness
  • Improve keratin plug formation at dry-off
  • Reduce the incidence of post calving uterine infection, reducing days from calving to conception

Zinc is a very important micronutrient which supports the cow’s natural immune function.

Unlike the Zinc we use to prevent Facial Eczema, ProPath® LQ Zn 180 is highly bioavailable and is rapidly transported out of the gut and into cells where it is required to support immune function.

The product can be administered as a dry powder over feed or via the dosatron, as it is highly water-soluble.

At the recommended dose rate of 2 to 4 grams per cow per day, treatment cost is 2.7 to 5.4 cents per cow per day (excl. GST).

We have plenty in stock and encourage anyone wanting to boost their cows’ natural defenses against any issues listed above to talk to us.
