Latest Spore Count Results

April 9, 2020

Grass samples tested this week from the MVS Monitor Farms have shown the following:

  • Hinuera Monitor Paddocks – 26,000 spores/gram
  • Matamata Monitor Paddocks – 6,000 spores/gram
  • Te Poi Monitor Paddocks –  6,000 spores/gram
  • Tirau Monitor Paddocks –  110,000 spores/gram
  • Walton Monitor Paddocks –  10,000 spores/grams

Spore counts continue to surprise, with counts on the Tirau monitor farm reaching 110,000 spores/gram and in Hinuera counts continue to hold above 25,000 spores/gram.

Other monitor farms are continuing to trend at or under 10,000 spores/gram. However we can still be in for a late spike if Met Services forecast for more rain is correct.

The latest spike seen on the Tirau monitor farm reinforces that all farms have variation, therefore we recommend assessing your own farm’s spore counts before making changes to zinc supplementation.

We are continuing to provide a spore counting service through this lockdown period. We have designated drop off bins at the clinic should you bring in any grass for processing.
We ask that if you plan on bringing grass in please call the clinic before you do so for further instructions.
